Benefits of a Geothermal Heat Pump

Energy-Efficient HVAC Solution

Uses the earth's stable underground temperatures instead of burning fossil fuels, helping reduce energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions while providing efficient heating and cooling.

Reliable Year-Round Performance

Unlike air-source heat pumps, geothermal systems rely on stable underground temperatures to deliver consistent heating and cooling, even during sub-zero winters.

Quiet & Discrete Operation

Unlike traditional air conditioners and heat pumps, geothermal systems don't require a large outdoor condenser and operate as quietly as a modern refrigerator.

Extended Lifespan

Protected indoors and underground, geothermal loop fields can last 50 years or more, while the indoor heat pump typically lasts 20 to 25 years.

Geothermal Conversion & Installation Process

A standard geothermal setup happens in four main steps:

Ductless Mini Split

Planning & Design:

Experts evaluate your property, soil conditions, and heating and cooling needs to determine the right system size.

Installing the Ground Loops:

Crews install durable underground piping, called ground loops, beneath your yard or in a nearby pond. If you have plenty of yard space, the loops are installed horizontally. For smaller lots, crews drill deep vertical boreholes instead.

Installing the Heat Pump:

Technicians remove your existing heating system and install a new geothermal heat pump, connecting it to your home's existing ductwork or radiant floor heating system.

Filling the System:

The ground loops are filled with a water-and-antifreeze solution that circulates continuously, transferring heat into your home during the winter and removing it during the summer.

Signs You May Need Geothermal Maintenance or Repair

Our expert technicians can quickly diagnose what your geothermal heat pump system may be telling you. Use this guide to understand common warning signs — if any sound familiar, call us today for fast service.

Unexplained Spikes in Utility Bills

Possible Causes: A failing compressor, a problem with the loop circulation system, or restricted fluid flow through the ground loop.

What to Do: Check your thermostat to see if it's frequently running in Auxiliary or Emergency heat mode. If the backup heat is running during mild weather, schedule a professional inspection.

Loss of Heating or Cooling Performance

Possible Causes: Low loop fluid levels, a faulty expansion valve, a malfunctioning compressor, or mineral scale buildup inside the heat exchanger.

What to Do: Check the air filter and your thermostat settings. If airflow is normal but the air coming from your vents is lukewarm, turn the system off and contact our technicians.

Rattling or Grinding Noises from the Indoor Unit

Possible Causes: A failing indoor blower motor, worn-out fan bearings, or loose internal hardware.

What to Do: Turn off the system immediately at the thermostat or at the breaker to prevent major structural damage. Call for an emergency repair technician to inspect the motor assembly.

Gurgling, Bubbling, or Hissing Sounds from Pipes

Possible Causes: Air trapped in the ground ground loop or the indoor piping network.

What to Do: While this is not usually an emergency, it can reduce system efficiency. Continue using the system if it is otherwise operating normally, but schedule service so a technician can inspect and remove any trapped air.

Sudden System Lockout (System Shuts Down Completely)

Possible Causes: A tripped safety switch caused by abnormal pressure, water flow, or another system issue.

What to Do: Check your home's electrical panel to see if the breaker has tripped. If the breaker is fine and the system still won't restart, contact a technician for diagnosis and repair.

House Feels Excessively Humid in Summer

Possible Causes: A malfunctioning blower motor or an issue with the system's humidity control.

What to Do: Check your thermostat humidity settings. If they are correct but your home still feels sticky or damp, schedule a professional inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a geothermal heat pump?

A geothermal heat pump is an energy-efficient system that uses the constant temperature underground to heat and cool your home. Instead of burning expensive fossil fuels, it pumps a fluid through underground pipes to absorb steady warmth from the earth in the winter. In the summer, the process reverses, pulling heat out of your house and pushing it back into the ground. This keeps temperatures comfortable throughout your home, saving you a significant amount of energy year-round.

How much does it cost to install a geothermal heat pump?

Costs for installing a geothermal heat pump system can start around $15,000 and often run much higher, with pricing varying widely depending on the specific system model, your home's size, and the underground loop setup. That said, switching to geothermal may qualify your home for local utility rebates, and the potential energy savings can help offset the cost over time.

How much electricity does a geothermal heat pump use?

A standard home system typically uses about 4,500 to 7,500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each year, depending on home size and climate. Because underground temperatures stay steady all year, a geothermal system works much less than a standard furnace, often cutting energy use by 40-70% compared to conventional heating and cooling.

How long does a geothermal heat pump last?

The indoor heat pump unit typically lasts 20 to 25 years, which is nearly twice as long as a standard air conditioner. The buried underground loop field is protected from the elements and can last 50+ years.

What's the difference between a geothermal vs. standard heat pump?

The main difference between a geothermal heat pump and a standard heat pump is the source they use to exchange heat. A standard heat pump (commonly called an air-source heat pump) extracts heat from — or releases heat into — the outdoor air. A geothermal heat pump (also called a ground-source heat pump) exchanges heat with the ground a few feet underground, where temperatures stay mild and consistent year-round.
